Safari Blue
Safari Blue: Zanzibar’s Most Famous Sea Adventure 🌊🛶
Zanzibar’s most talked-about sea adventure is Safari Blue—a full-day excursion that explores the stunning Menai Bay Conservation Area, located on the south-west coast of Zanzibar Island. The trip departs from the fishing village of Fumba, which is the most convenient gateway to the wildlife, isolated sandbanks, and rugged island scenery of Menai Bay. On Safari Blue, you’ll travel by traditional dhow to see dolphins, visit untouched sandbanks, and snorkel among vibrant coral reefs.
The highlight of the trip is the two pristine sandbanks—soft white stretches of sand rising out of the clear blue Indian Ocean. In the morning, the dhow anchors at one of these sandbanks, allowing guests to relax, swim, or snorkel in the calm shallow waters. With snorkeling equipment and experienced guides, visitors can explore the colorful coral reef teeming with tropical fish. Beginners receive instruction, and fresh coconuts and local snacks are available throughout the day, creating a true tropical island experience.
After snorkeling, and depending on the tide, the group moves to a second sandbank near the island of Pungume. Here, guests spend the afternoon enjoying the peaceful beauty of the bay. Many visitors describe these sandbanks as some of the most idyllic places in the world—a perfect blend of untouched nature and serene ocean views.
Lunch is served on the sandbank and features a traditional Zanzibari meal of barbecued fish, rice, lentils, and fish curry. Chilled fruit juice, mineral water, and soft drinks are available throughout the tour. For an extra cultural touch, guests can join the crew for a sail on a “ngalawa,” a local canoe with outriggers carved from a single mango tree—an authentic way to experience traditional seafaring.
The return trip to Fumba is by sail, wind permitting, and guests typically arrive back at their hotels around 17:30 (5:30 pm). Before the tour begins, participants receive a short briefing covering the day’s program and safety guidelines. The dhows used for Safari Blue are hand-built from African mahogany and maintained to the highest standards. These locally constructed sailing vessels are fitted with outboard motors, marine VHF radios, life jackets, and other essential safety equipment, ensuring a safe and comfortable day on the water.
