Ngezi Rainforest tour
Ngezi Forest Reserve: A Living Rainforest on Pemba Island πΏ
The dense and wonderfully lush forest at Ngezi is one of the last remaining areas of primary forest that once covered western Pemba. Unlike the lowland forests of Zanzibar, Ngezi resembles the highland rainforests of East Africa, creating a unique and dramatic landscape. The reserve covers 1,476 hectares and is a true double canopy forest. Towering trees like Mgulele, Mwavi, Mtondoo, and Mvule reach up to 40 meters high, forming an upper layer that feels almost cathedral-like. Lianas twist between the trees, creating natural βswingsβ that playful monkeys love to use. This makes Ngezi not only a breathtaking natural area but also a lively habitat filled with wildlife activity.
Ngezi Forest is located in the north of Pemba and was designated as a reserve in the 1950s to protect its rare and indigenous ecosystem. Once, the forest covered the entire island, but today only small parts remain. Walking through Ngezi feels like stepping into a true rainforest, with towering trees, fresh air, and the constant sounds of wildlife. The visitor center is located about 4 km west of Konde, on the road to Ras Kigomasha, and serves as the starting point for all tours and trails.
One of the most exciting features of Ngezi is its wildlife. The forest is home to the Red Colobus Monkey, which is indigenous to Zanzibar and one of the most iconic species in the region. You can also spot Pemba Vervet Monkeys, which move through the trees in lively groups. High above, eagles may soar through the canopy, while the forest floor remains alive with hidden sounds and movement. Near the town of Wete, visitors can also find the Pemba Flying Fox, a rare fruit bat known for its fox-colored fur. This species looks like a small dog in flight, and Pemba hosts about 95% of its entire population, making it an incredibly special sight for wildlife lovers.
